Two men, Ogundare Tope, 34 and Ajoko Adebayo, 22, who allegedly defrauded one Abolola Joseph of N2million, were on Thursday charged before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court.
The accused are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and fraud.
The prosecutor, Insp. Caleb Leranmo, told the Court that the accused committed the offences in May 2016, at Igbogun Village in Ado-Ekiti.
Leranmo
alleged that the accused collected the N2million from the complainant,
promising that they would sell 20 plots of land to him at Igbogun
Village, a representation they knew was false.
“They
knew that the land was not for sale and still went ahead and collected
the money. All efforts by the complainant to get back his money proved
abortive,’’ he said.
The offences contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2012.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Mr Goke Oladimeji and Mr Ejelonu Marcus, Counsel to the first and second accused respectively, urged the court to grant their clients bail on liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 each, with two responsible sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties should reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case until April 26 for mention.
