Kano state government may have come up with a new way to stop the spread of HIV/AIDs.The Guardian reports the state, through the Hisbah Board, is working with the Kano State Agency for the Control of AIDS (KSACA) to pass a new law ensuring that intending couples go for HIV screening.

Making the announcement, the Director General of KSACA, Dr. Bashir Usman, said the purpose of this law is to save lives and keep the state free of epidemic.
He also said that the Hisbah Board would take the spiritual approach, while KSACA would take the medical approach towards the campaign.
This new bill is still being drafted. Upon completion, it will be submitted to the state House of Assembly, through the Ministry of Health in order to become a law.
While Kano state is trying to pass this new bill, Kaduna state already has a Pre-marital Medical Examination Enforcement Law for intending couples.
This law states that, “HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and genotype tests, which will be conducted simultaneously for both parties in an approved health facility, and the result explained to them by a qualified doctor, is to be kept confidential, and to be handed by the parties over to the person who is to conduct the marriage contract in the presence of witnesses."

It comes with a fine of N200, 000 or one year imprisonment, or both, for any person or facility that is found guilty of issuing a false result.
The deadline for medical checkup before marriage is three months and two weeks.
