According to Punch, the clash occurred on Monday, May
2, 2017 and the leader of the militant group, Ossy Ibori was killed by
Operation Delta Safe during the gun battle.
Reports say residents of the area have left the vicinity to safer communities for fear of a reprisal attack.
According to a source, “Many
people have been leaving the community because of fear of stray
bullets. No one knew that the notorious militant leader and his group
were in the creek of the community.
“The incident has caused tension in the area. People are running away.”
Reports
say the Army has intensified its search for other militants and their
colleagues from 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure have joined in the
operation.
Speaking
on the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the brigade, Captain
Ojo Adelegan, said there is no cause for alarm, adding that “It is
not impossible to have such a thing in a circumstance like this, but I
think we are there to ensure that peace returns to the area and that is
what we are doing right now.”
Meanwhile,
militants in the Niger Delta have threatened to resume attacks on
pipelines if the government does not commence dialogue with stakeholders
in the region.
